Lonny Bernath works today as a Sales Manager for International Business Machines Corporation, specializing in the sale of enterprise software to large companies and businesses. IBM began its life in 1911 as a computing-tabulating-recording company. This company of many hats came about due to the consolidation of several enterprises: The Tabulating Machine Company, the International Time Recording Company, the Computing Scale Company and the Bundy Manufacturing Company. This combination was renamed International Business Machines, which had previously been used as the moniker for a Canadian subsidiary, in 1924. Security experts gave the company the nickname Big Blue, for its common use of the color blue in packaging, products and logo.

Lonny Bernath Attends Prestigious Sloan School of Business

The Sloan School of Business at MIT is known for its innovation and business research, and from its classrooms have emerged influential ideas in management and finance. The Black-Scholes model, Theory X and Theory Y, the Solow-Swan model, the Modigliani-Miller theorem, the random walk hypothesis, the binomial options pricing model and the field of system dynamics are all dynamic and business changing ideas which have emerged from Sloan.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, attended by Lonny Bernath in 2001, began its ascendancy in 1914. Named modestly the Engineering Administration curriculum, or Course 15, the educational focus of the department grew from the Department of Economics and Statistics. The theories and practices of management as studied by Lonny Bernath in his pursuit of his Master’s of Business Administration emerged from the growing scope of business study. 1925 saw the first master’s degree in management established, and the first university-based executive education program was created under the name of the School’s eventual namesake, Alfred P. Sloan, the CEO of General Motors and a MIT graduate of 1895. The School was renamed in his honor in 1964.

In the year 2000, the year before Lonny Bernath enrolled for his Master’s in Business Administration at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the School had grown to become the second largest undergraduate major at MIT. After Bernath achieved his MBA, the undergraduate management minor program was limited to 100 students each year. Sloan School of Management holds forth the mission “…to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice."

Lonny Bernath Hometown Known as American Riviera

Lonny Bernath grew up in Miami Beach in Florida in the United States, sometimes referred to as the American Riviera. Bernath and his family relocated to Miami Beach when he was only 2, so the region is as his birthplace. Biscayne Bay, which was dredged by Carl Fischer in 1915, separates the Beach from Miami proper. Divided between South Beach and North Beach, Miami Beach is a pre-eminent beach resort of the Americas, with a historic Art Deco District, a thriving art community and a tourist driven economy which is consistently strong. Quite an accomplishment for land which went for 75 cents an acre to father and son purchasers Henry and Charles Lum in 1870, and which was planted in avocados in the 1880’s.

Developer Carl Fisher helped advertise Miami Beach as an excellent site for winter homes of the wealthy, and in the 1920’s grand hotels began to rise. Miami Beach was created from the landfill dredged from Biscayne Bay; Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands, the Sunset Islands, Normandy Isle and the Venetian Islands all rose as man-made creations. The Miami Beach peninsula became an island with the connection of the ocean to the bay at the opening of Haulover Cut. The 1926 Miami hurricane derailed much of this burgeoning prosperity, but even in the 30’s Miami Beach continued to welcome tourists with small hotels and rooming houses. These eventually became the Art Deco historic district of today.

Lonny Bernath Born Into An Ancient History

Lonny Bernath is by birth a Northerner, born in Middletown, New York State in the United States.  Middletown comprises two important parts of the future of Lonny Bernath.  First, it is part of the metro complex which has become the Hudson River Valley, running north to south in New York State.  Second, the Hudson River Valley has long been the corporate base of Bernath’s employer today, the International Business Machines Corporation.  The Hudson River of New York State has cut through ancient sandstones, redbeds and gneiss stone which ranges from the Precambrian period to the Triassic, flowing through fjords created during past ice ages.  Stone cliffs which are more resistant to erosion have risen on the west side of the river, now 400 to 800 feet high.

Lonny Bernath was born in what is referred to as the Hudson Lowlands Ecoregion, which was filled by a glacier during the last ice age which reached to Long Island in the south.  The Great Lakes drained down the Hudson River at the end of the last ice age from the ancient Lake Iroquois, the remnants of which are known today as Lake Ontario.  The Rome Sand Plains are the remains of sand deposits left from the Lake Iroquois drainage.  The Hudson Valley is inhabited today by descendants of the first Europeans to arrive in the 17th century, such as Lonny Bernath and the 3 to 3.5 million residents in what has become the Hudson Valley metropolis area. Today’s millions were preceded by the Mahican and Lenape Native Americans, known as River Indians in vastly different times.
